Kenneth Anger (satanist/filmmaker) had an actor in mind to play Lucifer, but then attended a happening in San Francisco being performed by the 19 year old Bobby Beausoleil's psychedelic chamber music group, The Orkustra. He was enthralled and after the show, he approached Beausoleil to take the lead role in Rising, who agreed on one condition - that he write and have The Orkustra perform the soundtrack. Long story short, Anger and Beausoleil commenced filming but then had a falling out. Beausoleil joined Charles Manson's cult killed a drug dealer for selling him shitty mescaline and was convicted to death, then luck have it California changed their laws and he is now serving life in prison (inconsequentially he's up for parole again in 2013). Meanwhile with Beausoleil tied up in prison Anger decided to have Jimmy Page write the soundtrack. Page wrote a 23 minute long soundtrack and the film toured on it for a few years. But after three years of showing the film Anger decided he was not happy with the music, Anger and Page had a falling out, and in the late 70's he contacted Beausoleil to see if he would be willing to write the soundtrack. With permission, Bobby Beausoleil wrote and performed this soundtrack in prison, accompanied by his fellow prisoners. This is the soundtrack that is on the final version of the film.
